Q: What's an OCT?

A: Here's a good explanation! yamiredpen.deviantart.com/art/…

Hopefully it covers all you need to know about OCTs!

NewQ: When do auditions start? When will auditions end?

A: We had an initial audition period that ended on October 2nd, but we didn’t receive enough auditions for a roster of 32, so the OCT will be on hiatus until the 26th of October. That’s when the second audition period will begin, and this final audition period will end on the 20th of November.

Q: How many auditioners are you accepting?

A: We are aiming for a 32-man roster. If there are more than enough auditioners, then we can bump up the number to 64.

Q: How will match-ups be decided?

A: Via random number generator.

Q: What happens if there are forfeits?

A: If there is a forfeit, then the other person will win by default. In the case of a double forfeit, then we may have to let in a previously eliminated contestant to fill the roster space.

Q: Will there be critiques for each round?
A:
Yup, there will be critiques for auditions and for each rounds. These critiques will be public - If you don’t want your critique to be public, please send us a note and let us know! Audition critiques will be posted shortly after the roster has been announced, and round critiques will be posted shortly after match-ups are announced.

Q: What kind of OCT is this?

A: A fighting boarding school. There will be no magic, no mythological species(angels, demons, ect.), just pure hand-to-face combat with a bit of Sci-fi.

This OCT is pretty setting-heavy, but still contains more than enough room for your own ideas and stories to grow! Let's see what you can do with what you're given!

This is a visual OCT, meaning there will be no written entries allowed. Sorry!

It's a bit difficult to judge pictures vs no pictures against each other.

If you'd like to submit a written story anyway, please consider Spectator Entries!

Types of mediums allowed: Comics (Encouraged), Interactive Comics, Animation

Q: How long will the rounds be? Will there be extensions?

A: The rounds will last 4 weeks each. 1 additional week can be given per round if asked. If heavily requested, 1 final week can be given, but no more.

Contestants are free to ask for a few extra days, but only if their opponent is absolutely fine with it. Please don't abuse this, as it could count against you.

You may receive a maximum of 2 days.

:star:Q: What should we include in our Reference Sheets?

A: Your reference should include:

  • A "main" picture (A full body drawing. This is optional, but encouraged.)

  • A turnaround (Front, back, side views. Two 3/4th views of front and back are alright as long as it covers enough details.)

  • As much information as you see fit. (But try to keep it to the point/important.)

General Info such as:

  • Full Name and Nick/preferred name

  • Gender

  • Age

  • Stats (Please see how to distribute stats in the Character section)

  • Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Fighting Style

  • Description (Tell us about your characters)

  • Brief History (Optional)

  • Personality

  • Weapons (if any)

These references are mostly for your potential opponents, so the more information they have to work with, the better!

NewQ: What species are allowed in this OCT?

A: This OCT is a Humans only tournament. However, you are free to give them animal traits and/or prosthetics based on how they fight. (IE: A girl wearing cat ears/tail with large metal claws, or a boy with chainmail and flamethrower but his outfit looks like a dragon, etc.)

They must be mostly human, however.
Hybrids such as Human/Wolf or Human/Bird MUST be achieved artificially/unnaturally through science and experimentation!
Any traits you give them should be a secondary trait and you should explain how they got it.
Cyborgs are perfectly acceptable, but must still look human!

Q: How will the fights work?

A: Your main objective is to beat up your opponent's character until they can no longer stand. (Not literally.)

Whoever still has the energy and stamina to continue on wins. Characters may admit defeat during a fight to end it early. When the fight is over, no one is allowed to attack the other, as it would be seen as bad sportsmanship.

Q: An opponent might be able to fight even after they can't stand. In that case, what would we do?

A: Fights are meant to be over when one or the other can't go on anymore to reduce risk of serious injuries. If the loser cannot accept defeat and wants to continue the fight in hopes of turning the tables, they are advised to be careful since they're already at a major disadvantage.

Miracles don't always happen. You shouldn't risk it.

:star:Q: Can I kill my opponent's character?:star:

A: Please ask them for permission first! Respect the creator's wishes! However, even if they are fine with it:

Remember the school rules.

If you decide to break any of them for story purposes, please be aware your character will have consequences to face during either the current or next round. If you decide to let your own character go off with no proper punishment, then your character will:

-Be an open invite to be killed off by others

-No longer be guided/helped by Ruby

-Be refused help from all NPCs and School Staff

You are better off with just sending your opponent straight into the emergency room, not the grave.

:star:Q: Can my character break the school rules?:star:

A: Same answer as the above applies. If your character gravely injures or horribly cripples another student, then all others may do the same to your character without consequence.

Q: What should we include in our audition?

A: Show us a typical day in your student's life! Or, maybe they're a new student and are in the process of transferring in. They must be seen hearing about the tournament from Ruby.

Q: How will the entries be judged?

A: We will try our best to keep things as fair as possible! Don't worry so much about artistic talents. Please try to focus on getting the story across.

A few things to look out for: Does the story/art make sense? How easy to read is it? How well do the panels flow from one to the next? Is the font as clearly readable as possible?

We're looking for story and entertainment!

Q: Are spectator entries allowed?

A: Yes! Students who aren't participating in the tournament itself can be watching from the sidelines. Keep in mind, these aren't canon unless a winning round decides to include it/parts of it in it!

Q: What about blood/gore, nudity, profanity?

A: Please keep your fights as clean as possible. (the janitor doesn't get paid enough for this.)

Blood and gore is allowed, but please keep it within DA's rules. Nudity is discouraged (Everyone is a Barbie/Ken doll). Profanity is allowed to a certain degree.

Try not to go over 18+.

There is a time and place for everything, and we will take into heavy consideration just how well you execute things like this.

Q: May I team up/collaborate with another artist?

A: Yes! Teams are allowed in this tournament. The maximum is 2 people per team.

NewQ: I have art that I want to put into the group!

A: Great! Send us a note and we'll put it in the gallery for you!

Bullet; Orange~About The School of Hard Knocks:~Bullet; Orange

Q: Does the school have a map/layout?

A: We don’t have a map, but we have references for the general look of the school in the “NPCs + School Files” folder of the group gallery.

-SoHK-OCT- School File: The School of Hard Knocks by sarahthecat

Please remember that this resources are just to give you a general idea of what the school looks like - You’re free to interpret things like locations, classrooms, etc how you’d like. The school campus is much bigger than how it looks, allowing all the room your character will need to play in.

NewQ: What grade does the school cover? What ages are allowed?

A: Grades 5 - 12. The main age gap is 11 to 19.

Note: Students are kept in the school until graduation.

Q: Is there a dress code?
A:
Not really. But remember, we don’t allow nudity, so try to keep your character’s outfit appropriate - We don’t want anyone to be made uncomfortable with what your character is wearing. Just don’t go overboard, is all.

With that said, others are allowed to draw your characters more “covered up” if needed. As long as the changes are minor and the spirit of the character is still there, it’s okay.

NewQ: Can students send and receive mail through the school?

A: Once a student is enrolled into SoHK, all communication with the outside world will be cut. Mail sent into the school will be read, packages will be opened and inspected. If it's deemed "safe" and "acceptable", it will be rewrapped to look good as new and be given to the student.

If students try to send mail out, the school will read it and forge a reply back.

Q: What level of technology does the school have?

A: The school's knowledge is growing with each passing day. It focuses most of its never-ending funding on the science classes and the Medical Ward, thus everything is incredibly advanced. Students are able to get entire limbs and bodies replaced with artificial substitutes that act just like the real thing, if needed. The security program is almost impossible to breach, even by the smartest hackers.

Be warned: The school is always testing new kinds of medicine in attempt to find better ways to "fix" the human body. While they don't have to worry about running out of test subjects, the experiments they try can be inhumane.

Q: What's the Ranking System?

A: The ranking system judges how well a student is in school, both academically and how well they fight. The lower the number, the better they are. Students are encouraged to fight those stronger than them to become better.

Higher ranking students are given nicer rooms to stay in, and they get higher priority when it comes to things like the lunch line or free homework passes.

At the end of every school year, their "final" is a free-for-all brawl "tournament". Last ones standing will be acknowledged as the stronger ones.

The top 10 students are often leaders of clubs and are very difficult to defeat without proper planning.

Rank # 1 is dubbed "The Champion"

Q: So what's my OC's goal here?

A: You are a student, new or old, attending school. Recently, the school's "perfect student" Champion has been dethroned by a rule-breaking delinquent, and she has been abusing her power since.

The finals are coming up.

Rumor has it that the Ex-Champion is sneaking around the school's hidden passageways, recruiting those he thinks are worthy enough to defeat her during the all-out-brawl.

He is pitting everyone against her, and will guide your character through the OCT to see just who's the strongest of them all.

Q: Does the school have a schedule?

A: Yes, but following it isn't mandatory since that would restrict your stories quite heavily.

Q: Does my character have to be a human?

A: Yes. There are no monsters in this universe. Your character may be a cyborg, a mutant, and/or given animal traits. But if they absolutely must have things such as real wings or a tail, please explain how they got it.

Q: What happens to injured students/those who lost?

A: Normally, they are quickly escorted to the medical ward ASAP to get patched up. You are free to interpret things however you want in your rounds if you need to, this is just a default idea for unexplained endings.

Q: Can my character be the leader of the ______ club?

A: No. They are allowed to be a part of it, but not the leader. This is to avoid conflict with other contestants who may also want to be leaders.

However, if you manage to gather contestants with the same interests and form your own club, THEN you may pick a leader.

Please note: Drama caused by mutiny or general disagreement is not within our hands.

Characters do not have to be in a club.

Q: Can my character be a part of multiple clubs?

A: Yes, but try to stick with one "main" club. Having multiple themes onto a character may be hard to keep track of.

Your character may have 3 clubs in total; 1 main and 2 sides.

Bullet; Yellow~About NPCs:~Bullet; Yellow

:star:Q: What's the purpose of NPCs?

A: Each round, we will host School Events. The rounds will come with a theme, a staff/judge character giving the contestants a prompt. (Example: The Medical Ward will be hosting check-ups. Students must attend.)

These events will take place somewhere within the school, but not all over its campus. If you do not wish to participate the event, your round can simply just take place outside of the affected areas. The events are there to give you something to work with if you want to take advantage of it, but they’re in no way mandatory.

During these events, the staff will have their hands full. So they'll seek assistance from their associating NPCs.

These NPCs will become aggressive, and can be used as a plot point/reason to initiate a fight between the matched up contestants!

Please try to keep your story plot open for a few changes.

NewQ: What do you mean by "These NPCs will become aggressive"?

A: As the students climb the ranks and get closer and closer to fighting the Champion, they will encounter a few NPCs along the way. Namely ranks # 3 and # 2, who will try to stop you. They may be working with the staff, but they were also hired by Ruby to test your character to see if they are strong enough to fight the Champion.

You will be given a warning/heads up for when a School Event will happen, but if you wish to face the NPC off earlier that that, then that's fine.

Fighting your last opponent, as well as the Champion, is a MUST in the Finals.

Round 1 will NOT have an aggressive NPC due to it being a bit too early for events.

Use this time to get things started!

Q: Will some rounds be Vs. NPCs only?

A: No. Rounds will include only the matchups.

:star:Q: Do I have to include the events? Are they mandatory?

A: School Events are NOT mandatory. They are simply there to be fun and make the matchups look fancy, and possibly give your story a direction to follow.

The Staff members, and the NPCs, are important to the story and the system. They help with world building and the mood. While they may not be used in your rounds, keep in mind that they still exist in the background.

Q: If there's NPCs, then what role will the Judges play?

A: The Staff have more power and authority than the NPCs do and are generally older and wiser. The NPCs work as underlings to their associated Staff/Judge member. Think of the Judges being the big bosses who run the place, and the NPCs as their henchmen.

Their job is to help the students, but keep in mind that they do not tolerate troublemakers.

They are taught not to start fights with students. They however can, and will end them.

Judge characters are available to fight later on, but they will have 70 points put into their stats.

Q: What happened to Sasha?

A: One of our previous judges had to resign, but their character Sasha can still be used in your stories.

Bullet; Green~About Characters:~Bullet; Green

:star:Q: How old should my character be?

A: Since this is a highschool-level setting, your characters should be ages 11-19. You're allowed to have younger or older characters, but they should have reason as to why they are students there.

Q: Can my character have powers?

A: There is no magic allowed in this tournament. Try to make your powers make sense. (IE: An electricity bender using metal conductors to manipulate it, or someone with a flamethrower gauntlet pretending to control fire)

Q: Can my character be a cyborg/science experiment/mutant?

A: Yes! But please remember, your goal is to become the strongest and still fight fair. Becoming too powerful just might cripple you in the long run.

NewQ: What's the difference between a cyborg, a robot, and an android?

A:

  • Cyborgs are part human, part robot.

  • Robots are purely mechanical.

  • Androids are robots that look human. They are completely mechanical.

Q: What if my character doesn't want to/doesn't know how to fight?

A: That's fine, but remember that violence is everywhere. If your character does not fight, then they will most likely be a giant target to other students. If they don't know how to fight, then best of luck to you.

Q: Can my character fly?

A: Flight/air privileges are restricted and allowed only for the school security. We don't want student's jetpacks or handmade wings to malfunction mid-flight now, do we?
Your character may still have wings or rockets and whatnot.

Q: Can my character have split/multiple-personalities?

A: This is a tough subject. They are allowed to have multiple personalities, and they will still count as 1 person.

Please try to use this responsibly.

:star:Q: How do Stats work?

A: You will need to give your characters 5 stats, no more no less. They are as followed:

Stamina (How long can they last in a match?)

Offense (How much damage can your character deal overall?)

Defense (How much damage can your character take?)

Speed (How fast and evasive is your character?)

Intelligence (How creative/tactful is your character during a fight?)

You will be given 50 points to distribute to each stat, which has a maximum limit of 20. It's your job to fill this out and try to balance your character out.

Stamina: 0/20

Offense: 0/20

Defense: 0/20

Speed: 0/20

Intelligence: 0/20

Star! NPCs will also have stats, but instead of 50 points, they will use 60.

Judges/Staff will have 70 points.

Bullet; Blue~About Tag-Alongs:~Bullet; Blue

Q: Are Tag-alongs allowed? How many?

A: Tag-alongs are allowed! But keep in mind, only 1 person can become the Champion. You may have as many as 2 per team.

Q: Can my character bring my past round opponent's character along?

A: If you obtain permission from them, then it's fine.

Q: May I use an NPC as a tag-along?

A: No, for they are helping everyone. You may have them help your character many times during rounds, but they will not fight for you.

Bullet; Purple~About Weapons & Fighting Styles:~Bullet; Purple

Q: What kinds of weapons can my character use?

A: Anything under the sun and beyond! Swords, knives, maces, gauntlets, tasers, flamethrowers, chains, etc. But keep in mind, you're not killing your opponent! (Blades can be dulled down enough so they don't do TOO much damage, spikes are sanded down to a flat surface, and guns can be weakened for bullets to not pierce skin.) Any weapon that is marked too unsafe will count as illegal and will be confiscated ASAP.

However, these weapons are often rare to come by due to how life threatening they can be, so it's much more common for students to use items such as wrenches, bats (and other sports equipment), scissors, pans...

Destroying school equipment is a given, but try not to break too much. It's a hassle to get things replaced.

Q: Can my character not use weapons at all?

A: Of course! If they prefer to stick to hand-to-hand combat, then that's perfectly acceptable.

Q: What sort of fighting styles are okay?

A: All of them. You're free to be creative with your character's style, but be sure it's explained enough for others to get a good idea of it.

Q: Are guns okay?

A: Ranged weapons are acceptable as long as they are weakened down to not critically injure someone.

Q: Can my character use a custom made weapons?

A: Custom weapons are allowed! Just be sure to have a good reference of it and explain how it works.

Remember: No magic allowed. Its inner mechanics should make sense on a scientific level. (Even if it is really far fetched.)

Bullet; Pink~About Healing & Medicine:~Bullet; Pink

Q: How good is the school's medicine?

A: Very advanced! The school can provide working artificial limbs that function identically to real ones. But keep in mind, these things can become damaged beyond repair after enough uses, and the person will need a new limb altogether! These things take time to make.

As for medicine itself, they have 2 different kinds. One that acts like normal medicine that can treat sickness such as colds, flus, viruses...

And then Medigel, the school's most prized creation.

Medigel comes in several different varieties, but the most common type is the green gel. It instantly dulls pain and will patch up any injury on the body instantly, but it does not replace/fill in anything that was lost within the wound.

Q: Can my character make their own medicine?

A: They are free to try. Chemistry students have a much higher chance of producing and creating successful medicine while others may injure themselves due to not knowing how to handle the chemicals and equipment.

Q: Can my character carry around first-aid kits to help others?

A: They are allowed! But try not to throw Medigel onto students while they fight. You might completely miss the wound and it can get on their faces...

Q: Can my character use Medigel?

A: Yes they may! But keep in mind each type's rarities and incorrect uses could cause some horrible mistakes.

Bullet; White~Misc:~Bullet; White

NewQ: What kind of world is the school in?

A: Dubbed "Fight World", it is literally an alternative modern Earth where violence and fighting is NORMAL. It is EVERYWHERE. No one questions it, it's been embedded into their way of living since forever. The rich get fine luxuries that are incredibly durable while the poor have to make do with make-shift, shoddy junk. Mugging, fighting for money, team ups solely for benefits are quite common.

Q: How will my character interact with Ruby if he doesn't talk?

A: That's up to you to figure out. You can have Ruby write letters, play charades, however you want.

They say those who are great listeners can hear him loud and clear. Have fun with it!

NewQ: Can my character be in _(some sort of relationship)_ with Ruby?

A: Nope. Everyone (except for his 2 friends) is on the same level when it comes to Ruby. He is everyone's helper and guide, nothing more.

If you're hoping to gain insider info or something from him, you're better off talking to a different character.

NewQ: Can my character be in _(some sort of relationship)_ with ANY of the NPCs/judges?

A: Absolutely not. Sorry! They all already have their own friends and whatnot, so they aren’t interested in becoming close with any of the students. You may make your character a volunteer helper, but keep in mind that most of the characters will only tolerate you. Nothing more.

Q: Can I help with prizes?

A: Please do! Send a note to the group with what you can do/give out as prizes!

With flight restrictions in place I don't think I can use Karver, hmm good thing I got other OCT centered characters in reserve...
